Next Plane (Welcome Home), Tribute To The Christmas Soldier

Once again, Santa Mike (@sunspotmike) and Santa Wendy (@sunspotwendy) perform a live version of one of Sunspot’s holiday favorites. This original Christmas song is a about a Christmas soldier, it’s a dedication to servicemen and women coming home at the end of the Iraq War and their families, a Christmas soldier who sacrificed so much. It’s one of Sunspot’s few songs which were both written and recorded in the acoustic format. When we originally worked on it, it was specifically about the excitement we felt that a long conflict was over, one that we knew a lot of people who were involved in, who were proud of their service (because all politics aside, they absolutely felt they did something good.)  We were excited about the idea of more and more families being reunited and more and more of our friends and loved one out of danger and back where they belong. The best place a soldier can be on Christmas is at home.

“Next Plane (Welcome Home)” was originally written and recorded in 2011 for the MAXMAS II compilation disc, featuring holiday music from a variety of Madison musicians.  You can listen to the studio recorded version here. The rest of the CD is super irreverent, funny, and heavy takes on Christmas classics. It was the brainstorm of a few of our friends and we were excited to be involved with it. With all of the jokes and ridiculousness, we wanted to do something different (usually, we’re the ones who are ridiculous!)

We wrote the song the week of Thanksgiving in 2011 and recorded the guitars and vocals ourselves in Mequon, that weekend. We had played that Saturday on the east side of Milwaukee at the Up and Under Pub. We recorded it the very next morning after the show.

The live performance in this video took place at the Musicians Networking Christmas Party at the Branch Street Retreat in Middleton, WI on December 11th, 2013.

There’s dust in my bunk
and no snow upon on the ground,
it’s 110 outside and I wake up at every little sound.
I’m sick of being afraid, I’m tired of the bad dreams,
I won’t watch my son grow up on a computer screen.

I’ve seen too many ghosts of Christmas Past,
I’ve seen too many ghosts at all.

I know the fireplace was cold,
while I was being GI Joe,
and I’m sorry you poured your Christmas wine alone.
But I won’t miss another one,
And this year I’ll put down my gun,
This Christmas I’m on the next plane home.

There’s a table waiting for me,
and they’re playing my favorite song,
There’s a girl that’s waiting for me,
and she’s waited for too long.
But too many friends have gone,
and I’ve read too many tags,
There’s too many people I love,
coming back beneath a flag.

I’ve seen all the ghosts of Christmas Past,
I’ve seen too many ghosts at all.

I know the fireplace was cold,
while I was being GI Joe,
and I’m sorry you poured your Christmas wine alone.
But I won’t miss another one,
And this year I’ll put down my gun,
This Christmas I’m on the next plane home.
This Christmas I’m on the next plane home.
