A combination of theater, audience participation, multimedia stage show, and rock concert party, Sunspot’s “Major Arcana” links live performances of their songs with the story of Joe, a recent college graduate who lives most of his life online. The audience sees Joe through the eyes of the people he meets in the digital world, especially an Internet Psychic whose Tarot readings form the heart of the story.

This song is a double shot of “Sweet Relief” and “Tunguska”, both from “Singularity” album. The tarot card that represents “Sweet Relief” is “The Hanged Man” which is a pean for the beginning of separation, the start of a change. It’s the idea that the grass is greener on the other side of the street. The notion of emotional divorce from the world begins to seem attractive because there has to be a better way and for “Tunguska” it’s “The Wheel of Fortune” which is the moment of impact, when that isolation begins. Joe gets the last vestiges of his hope destroyed, just blown away. Of course, that’s based on the Tunguska Event, where in 1908 a meteor or asteroid crashed into the Earth in Siberia at a thousand times the force of the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. It was the largest impact in recorded human history.

Sunspot’s “Major Arcana” tour was about creating a completely new type of experience that’s personal like a rock concert has the emotional weight of a musical, that’s dynamic visually like a film, and has the depth of great literature. The band premiered the show at SXSW and took it on a tour of America’s East Coast, Midwest and South.Recorded at The Annex in Madison on the last night of their tour and is a complete live production specially recorded, along with tour videos, deleted scenes, bonus songs, a commentary track, and other special features. This DVD is the culmination of the tour and stage show. can be picked up here: https://sunspot.bandcamp.com/merch/major-arcana-dvd

Sweet Relief

I’m just a puppet in your hands,
a slave to your demands,
too terrified to live life on my own.
Soldier for your affection,
doll in your collection,
but you’ve got a mind I’ll never know.

Sweet relief,
why can’t you stay?
Just a moment longer.
Sweet relief,
your smile I’ll save.

Tied to my purse,
the martyr’s curse,
tangled in the Cat’s Cradle of your plan.
Spend all night on a call,
debating nothing at all,
thinking I can save what no one else can.

Sweet relief,
why can’t you stay?
Just a moment longer.
Sweet relief,
your smile I’ll save.
The vampires that prey on my conscience,
will trade my goodwill for my common sense.
Sweet relief,
why can’t you stay?

And this resolve is gone,
the eggshells I’ve been walking on.
Can I carry on?
Can I carry on?
When this freedom is gone,
can I carry on?
Being your servant and your boy,
your trifle and your toy,
drained until all that’s left of me is a void.

Sweet relief,
why can’t you stay?
Just a moment longer.
Sweet relief,
your smile I’ll save.
The vampires that prey on my conscience,
will trade my goodwill for my common sense.
Sweet relief,
why can’t you stay?

Tunguska

It came out of nowhere,
and hit my blindside.
it served me right, well I guess it served me right.
And I was unaware,
and tongue-tied,
left on the ropes, with no antidote.

And I thought the world was going to end,
I couldn’t speak, my stomach dropped,
I threw up in my mouth as you delivered the knockout,
my mind was in some sort of state of shock.

When you broke the bond,
a thousand times an atom bomb,
I was blown away,
just like Tunguska.
Flattened by a fireball,
to only a shadow on the wall,
Just another meaningless,
second-rate apocalypse,

Too hot inside me,
like skin on fire,
I couldn’t bear it,
but couldn’t escape it.
Angry and paralyzed,
like the air can’t reach my lungs,
completely knocked back.
Completely gobsmacked,

And I thought the world was going to end,
I couldn’t speak, my stomach dropped.
I was screaming nyet,
when you made good on all your threats,
my mind was in some sort of state of shock.

When you broke the bond,
a thousand times an atom bomb,
I was blown away,
just like Tunguska.
Flattened by a fireball,
to only a shadow on the wall,
Just another meaningless,
second-rate apocalypse,

A global-killer,
with civility,
and the sudden impact,
made a crater out of me.

When you broke the bond,
a thousand times an atom bomb,
I was blown away,
just like Tunguska.
Flattened by a fireball,
to only a shadow on the wall,
Just another meaningless,
second-rate apocalypse.
