Making A Deal With the Devil – Ol’ Scratch Blues

As long as people have been successful, those people have been dogged by the rumors that they didn’t use fair means to do it. When they see someone succeed, there’s jealousy. That person didn’t deserve it, why are they doing something amazing and I’m not? How did they get this and I didn’t? We’re always going to be jealous of something. The grass is always greener, etc… But when you combine that with our superstitious nature, people don’t just cheat the normal way, but get assistance from a supernatural power.

Where does that superstition come from? Why does it rain some seasons and not others. Why are people stricken with illness indiscriminately? That’s a whole different topic that we can save for a different episode.  But trying to make sense of a world that often doesn’t, trying to find reason in forces that have too many variables to be able to predict. So, to cope with that complete sense of helplessness, we create stories that might help give us some modicum of control over an unfair world.

In Christianity, you can only say that bad things happen because “of God’s Will” so many times before God starts looking like a real jerk. He needs an adversary, he needs someone to make people do bad things, to lead people astray. So, they gave him a Fall Guy.

The one guy that we’ve always been able to count on was The Devil. Old Scratch, Satan, the great adversary, the fallen angel who is the enemy of God and all Holiness.

Enjoy your time now,
enjoy it while you can,
you signed that paper,
you signed it with your hand.

And when you die,
you’re gonna fry,
for nothing but a lie.

The fortune and the fame,
and the ladies too,
But can you see that old black dog,
coming after you.

Enjoy your time now,
enjoy it while you can,
you signed that paper,
you signed it with your hand.

And when you die,
you’re gonna fry,
for nothing but a lie.

And when you die,
you’re gonna fry,
for nothing but a lie.

Nothing but a lie.
