Stardust Lyrics Video – The Hubble Space Telescope and Aleister Crowley

“Stardust” originally appeared as a live track off of Major Arcana, our live DVD rock opera that we released in 2010. It was meant to be a song that showcased the character’s growth at the end of the show, it was about discovering the powerful in your own life, about realizing that as humans, we’re made up of the same materials that are found in the stars. We’re all the same matter on the inside, whether you’re something cosmic and incredible or just a regular person. One of the fun parts of Major Arcana was the use of tarot cards to represent where the character was at in his development. “Stardust” was written to represent The Magician. Here’s how the Magician tarot card is described:

Mastery of the material world, creative action, self discipline and a willingness to take risks.  An ability to recognise one’s own potential, the power to initiate, communication and wit.

So, that’s what our character discovered in this part of the show. We wanted a song that was beautiful and dramatic, something that can evoke the emotions of discovering something awesome in yourself. And when you’re talking about magicians, where else to start for inspiration but the most famous wizard of all time, “The Most Wicked Man in The World”, Mr. Aleister Crowley himself! Ozzy Osbourne, of course, has a classic song about “Mr. Crowley” and The Great Beast even inspired Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page to buy a house that he owned on Loch Ness (incidentally, a place that I made a pilgrimage to as a amateur cryptozoologist and it’s just gotta be one of the greatest sites on the planet.)

Aleister Crowley’s most famous piece of writing is The Book of The Law in which he famously writes “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” and “Love is the law, love under will.” That’s the idea, that in reality, the only thing that can matter to you are the things that you care about, the things that you love. That it’s in your power, no one else’s. It’s a powerful thought and it perfectly fit what we wanted the character to be feeling at that point in the work. A renewed sense of self and his own will to power.

“Stardust” in its original recording is nice and heavy, an epic metal feel. A slow build (what Rich Albertoni from Madison newspaper, Isthmus, called “Stardust”, to quote him directly, “serene…  <the song> sublimely ponders human connections to the physical universe.” Here’s the original version:

We had an acoustic performance scheduled on WMMM 105. Triple M FM in Madison and we wanted to do a special arrangement for it. We ended up loving the arrangement so much that we started playing it like that at live shows and that’s why we decided to put it on the end of the the Arthuriana EP. Here’s the original live version of the track:

After a few times, it really became one of our favorite live songs and it was one of the tracks we played on our 6-States-in-1-Day Tour that we did for the launch of Arthuriana.  It’s a song that’s transformed a lot since we first wrote it in May of 2010 and when we wanted to make a lyrics video for it, there was nothing better we could think of then using images from the NASA Hubble Space Telescope because they really capture the awe and majesty of the universe. And that’s the point, between Aleister Crowley, NASA, the Hubble Space Telescope, Andromeda, Sirius, whatever… we’re all made of the same stuff and that makes us all awesome.

Lyrics:

We awoke at the end of an era,
We came to life in the footnotes of time,
We are stardust made conscious and breathing,
orphans of the suns that have died.

We are created but we are the makers,
we are lucid inside the Dreamtime.
We are the Alphas and the Omegas,
we are what we choose to define.

Love is the only law,
and it cannot be killed.
We are the stars,
we are of stars,
so love what you will.
Love is the only law,
and it cannot be killed.
We are the stars,
we are of stars,
so love what you will.

And the Seraphim will sanctify,
the particles that illuminate the sky.
And the Seraphim will sanctify,
the particles that illuminate the sky.
What was once will always be,
the universe is inside me,
the magician that wants to be free.
To be free.

We awoke at the end of an era,
We came to life in the footnotes of time,
We are stardust made conscious and breathing,
orphans of the suns that have died.

Love is the only law,
and it cannot be killed.
We are the stars,
we are of stars,
so love what you will.
Love is the only law,
and it cannot be killed.
We are the stars,
we are of stars,
so love what you will.
We are stardust made conscious and dreaming,
we are what we choose to define.
We are stardust made conscious and dreaming,
we are what we choose to define.
Love under will.
