The Fire In Which We Burn – Star Trek Generations Tribute

We just created a lyrics video for our recent track, “The Fire In Which We Burn”. Since we grabbed the line from a Star Trek movie, Generations (and  we know they grabbed it from a poem by Delmore Schwartz called “Calmly we walk through this April’s Day”!), we decided to make a video about the Nexus from that movie. In the film, The Nexus is heaven. It’s a place where you go to live forever inside your most pleasant dreams, but Captain Kirk decides that he needs to leave it because it isn’t real. Our song is about getting trapped inside our own memories and our own pasts that we forget to live in the now and enjoy and appreciate the present…  So here is our tribute to Star Trek Generations. The day it opened (almost 20 years ago now), Mike (our bassist and singer) proudly wore his Trek uniform to school!

We skipped Captain Kirk’s death in the video, well, because that’s where the movie went lame. Other than that, though, the moments with Data are fantastic. William Shatner and Patrick Stewart have some nice chemistry, but the big explosions happen between Captain Picard and Malcolm McDowell as Doctor Soran.

Memory in soft focus,
dreams of the past,
a little crutch we can hold on to.
Some things weren’t made to last.

Don’t look back,
it will only make you slower,
Don’t question,
the things you cannot change.
This moment,
the only thing you can hold onto,
don’t spend it in a cage.

You are free,
choose to be.
The Fire in Which We Burn.
You are free,
choose to be.
The Fire in Which We Burn.

A hazy wave of rumination,
days gone by,
An unreliable narration,
A well that ran dry.

Don’t look back,
it will only make you slower,
Don’t question,
the things you cannot change.
This moment,
the only thing you can hold onto,
don’t spend it in a cage.

You are free,
choose to be.
The Fire in Which We Burn.
You are free,
choose to be.
The Fire in Which We Burn.

It’s later than you think,
it’s later than you planned,
It’s over in a blink,
it’s over in a flash.

And the hourglass runs out of sand.

You are free,
choose to be.
The Fire in Which We Burn.
You are free,
choose to be.
The Fire in Which We Burn.
